Illustrated history and technical development of Dutch domestic clocks from 1596 to about 1850. Different styles of cases, dials and movements and the special features of Hague clocks, stoel clocks, staart clocks and longcase clocks are described, many of these features being unique to these types of clock. Consideration is given to the special features of Dutch casework and dials, and especially details of the mechanisms. The special system of Japanese timekeeping is explained and the type of clocks that were developed from the European examples introduced by Dutch traders. Deatails are given of Japanese lantern clocks, pyramid clocks and pillar clocks, all peculiar to Japan. Illustrated throughout with diagrams and photographs, some in colour, of Dutch and Japanese clocks and their mechanisms from both public and private collections.
Laurence Edwards (1907-84) was a respected horologist interested in both the historical aspect of the subject, as well as the stylistic and mechanical details of all types of clocks.
